As everyone is looking forward to Spring Break and the upcoming (hopefully) Spring weather, I wanted to share that Ms. Kelly Deters will be joining speech starting April 3rd through the end of the school year. Ms. Deters will be completing her student teaching in speech pathology here at Indian Trail and will be working along side Ms. Barrett. Ms. Deters is getting her master's degree in speech-language pathology from Northwester University.
From Ms. Deters: I am a second-year speech pathology graduate student at Northwestern University. I will be graduating in June after my clinical placement at Indian Trail Elementary. I am originally from Northeast Iowa, and I moved to Chicago several years ago. I enjoy trying all of the restaurants the Chicago area has to offer and jogging by Lake Michigan to burn off all those calories! I am excited to start working with the students at Indian Trail this spring! Ms. Barrett is joining the 21st century and is now on Twitter! Feel free to follow me at @SBarrettSLP to stay current on speech room happenings :)
This week, a lot of students have been practicing their giving of directions as well as their listening to directions with a Valentine's Day barrier activity. We've used this activity to talk about the importance of using specific and descriptive language, taking our listener's perspective, and asking follow up questions to directions that confuse us. Students had fun lifting the barrier to see if their paper matched their partners! Some of my students are working on asking follow-up questions during conversations. This is an important skill to reciprocal conversations. It is important that conversations are not one sided, but that our conversational partner feels we are taking their interests and responses into consideration. Below is an example of some follow-up question brainstorming completed with a student during speech.
