This is a wonderful video, made by The Stuttering Foundation, that provides some suggestions about how to talk to with the child who stutters.

Each week, we have a new WORD OF THE WEEK in speech. The word is displayed on top of the bookcase just inside Miss. Barrett's office door so that everyone in the school can see our WORD OF THE WEEK when they walk by. Some students practice using the WORD OF THE WEEK in a sentence in addition to defining it. The website above is a great vocabulary resource to find good child friendly definitions for words. I love to have children define new vocabulary terms in their own words, but if you are looking for a way to describe a new word to your child, I would suggest looking up definitions on this website.
After you give them a good definition, suggest that they make up a definition of their own using their own words. It's also a great idea to have them draw a picture showing the meaning of the new vocabulary word and have them use the word in a sentence! Here is a grid that I sometimes fill out with students when teaching them a new word. |
